Why a flight is called off, who makes the call, and exactly what you get when the sky says no.

Quick answer

Balloon flights in Marrakech are cancelled only for weather or safety: strong or gusty wind, rain, low cloud or fog. The pilot makes the final decision on the morning, and you then choose a new date or a full refund – if it happens at the launch field, we drive you back to your hotel. Book early in your stay so a spare morning is available.

A hot air balloon Marrakech cancelled at first light is a let-down, but it is also proof that the pilot is doing the job properly. Balloons only fly in calm, clear air. Many Marrakech mornings give us exactly that, but not all of them, and when the wind, rain or cloud is wrong we stay on the ground.

This page explains what makes a pilot say no, how and when the decision is taken, what you receive afterwards and how to find out whether we are flying today. It also shares the one planning habit that rescues most trips: keeping a spare morning in your stay.

Why a balloon flight is called off

A balloon has no engine pushing it forward. It travels with the wind, and the pilot steers only by climbing or descending into layers of air that move in slightly different directions. That makes the weather the real boss of the morning. These are the conditions that keep us on the ground:

  • Wind that is too strong or gusty, at the field or higher up – it makes inflation and landing unsafe
  • Rain or showers nearby – a wet envelope is heavy and unsettled skies are a firm no
  • Low cloud – the pilot must see the ground and possible landing fields at all times
  • Fog or mist that does not lift in time
  • Any other safety concern the pilot spots on the day

A calm, clear evening says little about dawn – the air can change completely overnight.

Hot air balloon Marrakech weather: how the dawn decision is made

Our pilots follow the forecast closely, but the final decision is always taken on the morning itself, by the pilot who will fly you. A forecast gives a picture; the air at sunrise gives the answer. Sometimes the call comes before pickup. Sometimes we drive out to the launch field, watch how the air is moving and wait a little to see whether a mist clears or a breeze settles.

A little patience often turns a doubtful morning into a good flight. When the pilot does say no, the decision is final. Nobody argues with the sky – and you would not want to fly with a pilot who did. Our safety guide explains the rest of the checks behind every take-off.

What you get if we cancel: a new date or a full refund

If we cancel for weather or safety, the choice is yours: fly on another morning of your stay, or take a full refund. It makes no difference whether the call comes before pickup or once you are already at the field.

  • No card is taken online when you reserve – you book now and pay later
  • If you have already paid, a weather refund is in full
  • A new date depends on space that morning, so tell us quickly which day suits you

Hot air balloon Marrakech today: are we flying, are we open now?

We fly every morning of the year at sunrise, weather permitting. There are no afternoon or evening flights – the sunset page explains why – so if you ask after breakfast, “today” really means tomorrow's dawn. If you are already booked, there is nothing to check: the exact pickup time reaches you the evening before, and if the pilot cancels, we tell you.

If you are searching “hot air balloon Marrakech open now” because you want to fly at short notice, message us on WhatsApp at +212 600 643 098. We have no shop or office to walk into; bookings happen online and by message, so WhatsApp is the quickest way to ask whether a place is free for the next sunrise. You can also reserve online and we confirm by WhatsApp or email.

Keep a spare morning: the habit that saves most trips

The best protection against a cancelled flight costs nothing. Book your balloon for your first or second morning in Marrakech, not your last. If the weather grounds us, there is still time to fly before you leave.

  • Tell us how many mornings you have in Marrakech when you book
  • Keep your phone charged and WhatsApp working the evening before
  • Avoid fixing an early day trip for the morning after your flight – it may become your back-up
  • Leaving on an early plane? Mention your departure day so we can suggest the best morning
  • Read our list of mistakes to avoid around the flight

Are flights cancelled more often in some seasons?

Balloons fly all year round in Marrakech. We do not publish a cancellation percentage, because every season is different and any figure would be a guess. Broadly, the cooler months bring most of the year's rain and the odd foggy morning, while summer mornings tend to be dry. Wind can turn up in any month. If your dates are flexible, our season guide shows what each month feels like at dawn, from sunrise times to the snow on the Atlas.

Questions about hot air balloon marrakech cancelled

Who decides whether the balloon flies?

The pilot who would fly you decides, on the morning itself. Not the office, not a booking platform and not the guests. The pilot looks at the wind at ground level and higher up, the cloud, the visibility and any rain around, and makes a clear yes or no. That decision is never overruled to keep a schedule.

Will I get my money back if the weather stops the flight?

Yes. If we cancel for weather or safety, you choose between a full refund and a new date during your stay. Since you book now and pay later, in many cases nothing has been paid yet anyway. If you booked through a platform, its own refund process applies, so check your confirmation.

Hot air balloon Marrakech cancelled at the launch field – what then?

It happens now and then: the pilot waits for conditions to improve and they do not. We drive you back to your hotel or riad, and you choose a new date or a full refund. You lose nothing but a little sleep.

Can I rebook for the very next morning?

Often, yes, if there is space and the forecast looks better. Tell us how many mornings you have left and we suggest the best option. This is exactly why we recommend booking early in your stay rather than the day before you fly home.

Is a hazy or cloudy sky a reason to cancel?

Not always. A light haze or high, thin cloud is fine to fly in, although the Atlas Mountains may look softer on the horizon. Low cloud that hides the ground, or fog lying on the fields, is a different matter: the pilot must see where the balloon is going and where it can land.

Does a cancelled flight mean the operator is unreliable?

No – usually the opposite. A pilot who cancels on a doubtful morning is showing good judgement. Be more cautious about any company that says it never cancels. Our checklist for choosing an operator covers the weather policy question in detail.
