Quick answer

A hot air balloon ride in Marrakech, Morocco is a sunrise-only flight from fields a short drive outside the city, lasting 45 to 60 minutes in the air over villages, farms and olive groves with the High Atlas on the horizon. Pickup is about 1 h 30 before sunrise, breakfast follows the landing, and the whole outing takes 4 to 5 hours, so you are back at your hotel by late morning.

This is our complete guide to the hot air balloon ride Marrakech, Morocco is known for: a calm hour in the air at dawn over the countryside, followed by breakfast on the ground. We wrote it as pilots and crew who do this every morning, to answer the questions travellers ask before they book and the ones they wish they had asked.

In short, balloons here fly only at sunrise, take off outside the city rather than over it, and land wherever the wind allows in open country. The rest of this page explains how the morning unfolds, what it really looks like from the basket, how to book sensibly and how to fit a flight into a wider trip.

What the hot air balloon Marrakech experience is like

Most people are surprised by how quiet it is. Between bursts of the burner there is almost no sound, and because the balloon moves with the wind you feel no breeze on your face. The basket rises gently; there is no jolt and, for most guests, no sense of vertigo, since there is no fixed edge beneath you to measure the height against.

The pilot varies the height through the flight, from just above the treetops, where you can see farmers and animals, up to several hundred metres for the wide view. Balloons can go higher, but there is no need: the countryside is most interesting at a moderate height. For the details, read how high and how long a Marrakech balloon flies.

Where you fly and what you see

The balloon does not cross the medina or the city centre. Launch fields are in open countryside, and the route changes with the wind each day. You float over Berber villages, olive groves, small farms and dry riverbeds. The High Atlas runs along the horizon, often with snow on the peaks from about December to April on clear mornings, and on a clear day Marrakech itself is visible in the distance.

On busy mornings many balloons from several companies rise together, a sight worth getting up for in its own right. Our page on the views from a balloon over Marrakech explains how they change through the seasons.

Hot air balloon rides in Marrakech, Morocco: tours and how to book

You will find balloon flights sold in many ways: directly by operators, through hotels and riads, on booking platforms such as GetYourGuide or Viator, and as part of multi-day Morocco tours. All can work. What matters is knowing exactly what you are buying.

Before paying anyone, check that the price includes the hotel transfer and breakfast, who the operator actually is, what happens if the flight is cancelled for weather, and whether the basket is shared or private. Avoid buying from people approaching you in the street. With us you can book directly on this site, pay later, and get a confirmation by WhatsApp or email; prices are in the price guide.

Book for one of your first mornings in Marrakech, so a weather cancellation can be moved to another day.

What to bring and what to leave behind

Dawn in the countryside is colder than the city, especially from December to February, and by breakfast the sun is warm. Dress in layers and think practically.

  • Warm layers you can take off: a fleece or jumper and a light jacket
  • Closed flat shoes – the fields are dusty and uneven
  • A cap or hat (the burner is overhead, so nothing loose or floppy)
  • Phone or camera on a wrist strap
  • Sunglasses for the flight and breakfast
  • Leave at the hotel: long loose scarves, heels, large bags and drones

Fitting a balloon flight into your Morocco trip

Because you are back in Marrakech by late morning, a balloon flight leaves the afternoon free. Many visitors spend it resting by the pool, exploring the souks, or adding an activity such as a camel ride or quad biking in the afternoon, which we can arrange on request with a partner – see balloon and camel ride combinations.

If Marrakech is one stop on a longer route through Morocco, fly on one of your first days in the city rather than the morning you leave for the desert or the coast. Avoid the morning of an early flight home too. Marrakech Menara airport is about 15 to 20 minutes from the centre, but a weather delay could still put you under pressure.

Questions about hot air balloon ride marrakech morocco

Is a balloon ride in Morocco only possible in Marrakech?

Marrakech is the area we fly, and the only one we can speak for. Its open countryside, the Atlas skyline and the calm dawn air suit ballooning well. If you are travelling elsewhere in the country, plan your flight for your time in Marrakech.

Do I need to be fit to go ballooning?

You need to stand for the flight and climb into the basket, which most people manage easily. If you have reduced mobility, we have an accessible basket with a door and a seat; ask us before booking. For health conditions or pregnancy, contact us first and we answer honestly.

Will I feel sick in the basket?

A balloon travels with the wind, so the ride is smooth and there is none of the rocking you get on a boat. If you are prone to motion sickness, have a light dinner the night before, drink water, and tell the pilot if you feel unwell at any point.

What language is the briefing in?

Ask us when you book which languages your pilot can brief in on your date. The briefing is given in person before take-off, and the pilot keeps explaining during the flight, so you will always have the chance to ask questions.

Can I fly on the day I arrive in Marrakech?

Only if you land the evening before, since the flight is at sunrise. Most people prefer to rest on the first night and fly on the second or third morning, leaving later days free in case the weather means a change of date.

How do I know the flight is going ahead?

The pilot makes the final decision early in the morning. If we have to cancel for weather or safety, we let you know and you choose a new date or a full refund. If the call is made at the field, we drive you back to your hotel.
